Betting Guide

Wednesday 8th February 2017

The 'Sport of Kings' commonly known as horseracing goes hand in hand with betting, however to the novice punter who just wants an enjoyable day at the track, knowing how and what to bet on can be a daunting task. Picking Your Winner Easier said than done right?! There are many different ways to pick a winner at Cheltenham Festival. From the least scientific as picking by jockey silks or number to the more serious; horse or trainer's recent form, stats and trends common to winners, last time out, age, odds of past winners, the list is really endless. Bet Types Again there are many varying types of bets, from singles (just one selection) to doubles (two selections) and multiples (Trixie, patent, yankee, lucky15s, Canadian) but essentially there are two main types of bet. The Win (where the selection must win) and Each Way bet (this is actually two bets - one that the selection will win, the other that the selection will place in the race) are the most common. An Each Way bet will therefore be double the stake of the Win Only bet. Betting Tips If all of this is sounding a bit complicated, don't worry! Mares' Sponsor, OLBG.com, have come to the rescue. Their community of expert racing tipsters have made it really easy to find a winner. They've done the research so you don't have to (since 2002!) and have made all of their expert Cheltenham tips available free. How to Place a Bet Bookmakers You'll find a huge selection of bookies trackside at the course. They advertise their fixed prices on price boards and will happily take your bet and issue you a betslip that you redeem with them should you win. Tote You will find Tote windows in the stands and hospitality areas at The Festival. The minimum bet is £2 and all bets go into a pool from which the winnings is divvied out amongst the pool for those who backed the winner. Betting Shop Cheltenham is like Christmas to your local high street bookie. Betting shops around the country will have special offers to fight for your attention. Online If you're a bit savvy, you'll be looking for value and the best value is to be found online. Some bookie offers include a free bet if you back a winner over 4/1, your money back if your horse falls or finishes 2nd, enhanced odds and best price guaranteed. Be patient and wait for the bookie online offers to come out for best value. Race specific offers will be listed along with the tips as well as on OLBG's Bookmaker promotions page Most importantly is to never bet more than you can afford to lose. That way, you'll enjoy your betting for the buzz and excitement it adds to the spectacle that is Cheltenham Festival. Photo from Pat Healy…
